Abstract
The present paper presents a broad view of contributions by empirical social research on the development of the sociology of science in the last half century, and discusses the future prospects of the discipline. It gegins by considering the Mertonian tradition as an empirical sociology of the scientific institution; in then reviews the challenge of the Mertonian hegemony y programmatic alternatives aimed to subvert what was considered aspects of scientific activity. The changes in science and in society and the challenges posed by the social estudy os science, finally found an echo and sociology of science has opened the possibility constraints and ideological commitments that usually configure social and political choices.
