Abstract
This paper describes the long-term shaping of Colombian university as a place for debating and producing science and also as agent as socialization in scientific values and culture. Starting from the colonial period, it was very difficult to open a stable place for scientific education. When this was accomplished, it occurred under the protection and the shadow of the traditional professions. Changes in the structure and organization of the university in relation to the process of differentiation of new scientific disciplines are also considered. Brief attention is also given to the analysis of some salient features of the structure of the Colombian scientific comunity.
